Intro
For delivery businesses, time is critical: faster deliveries mean fresher food, lower costs and happier customers.
We built an adjustable, real-time routing planner with vehicle and driver assignment and advanced reporting. It assigns orders to drivers and builds optimized routes from locations, time windows, driver availability and traffic data, integrates with the order management system and updates in real time.
Goals and challenges
- 01
Real-time data
The planner had to consume live data from the order management system and traffic sources.
- 02
Scale at peak
It had to scale to peak order volumes and larger driver fleets.
- 03
Computational complexity
Vehicle routing with time windows is computationally hard, so solution quality had to be balanced against runtime.
Solution
Data preprocessing
- Geocoding addresses
- Delivery time windows
- Driver availability, including shifts and breaks
- Optional traffic data
Techniques
- OR-Tools for vehicle routing (VRP) and travelling salesman (TSP) problems
- Heuristics and metaheuristics to trade solution quality against runtime

Results
- Shorter delivery times and fresher product.
- Higher driver utilization and more deliveries per shift.
- Lower fuel use and operating costs.
- Better customer satisfaction and more repeat business.
- Real-time tracking and dispatch visibility.
